XXVII   STATUTORY CONFERENCE

AT ST ALOYSIUS COLLEGE, MANGALORE, KARNATAKA

    Greetings from AIFUCTO and Association of Mangalore University College Teachers’ (AMUCT)

We are happy to announce that the XXVII Statutory Conference of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations will be held at St Aloysius College (AUTONOMOUS), Mangalore, Karnataka from November 30, December1 and 2, 2013

We cordially invite the delegates and the observers from the affiliated organisations of the AIFUCTO to participate in the Conference and National Seminar.

The AIFUCTO Conference occupies great position in our activities and is an occasion for the teachers from all over India to review the activities of the organisation since the last conference, to analyse the situation prevailing in the country and also around the world, the changes that have been taking place around us especially in the field of education .

            This  Conference is held during  a critical phase when there are moves by the government to bring changes in the realm of higher education and introduce new pension schemes. These are extremely important issues and we believe many of these will not augur well for the teachers and the country   The AIFUCTO which is in the vanguard of the teachers’ movement has a significant role to play for which the conference has to discuss and show proper direction & guidelines to the movement.

NATIONAL SEMINAR:

As a part of the Conference, a National Seminar will be held on the second day of the Conference.

The theme of the Conference is “CHANGING PARADIGMS OF HIGHER EDUCATION – XII FIVE YEAR PLAN INITIATIVES” 

The sub-themes are:

  1. Alternative models of Higher Education
  2. Financing with an emphasis on State Funding and Recruitment of Teachers
  3. Quality enhancement through restructuring existing degree courses

 PAPERS FOR THE SESSION:  Papers are invited from the delegates on the above themes to be presented in the session.

  1. All papers should bear the full name of the author/authors, college/university, the affiliated Association and the full address with email id  at the top of the first page.
  2. Papers should be double spaced, footnotes to be similarly spaced. The total length should not exceed 10 pages(3000 words) including footnotes. ABOUT ORGANISERS AND VENUE

AMUCT

Established in 1986 AMUCT has always been in the forefront of Teacher Movement. It has the jurisdiction of three districts-DK, Udupi and Coorg under Mangalore University. But nevertheless, it has created quite an impact on higher education in this part of the country. AMUCT owns an office in the central part of Mangalore city, publishes bulletins regularly right from its inception and an interactive website updated almost on a daily basis. Being affiliated to AFUCTO  and FUCTAK, it has vibrantly pursued the issues of teachers and higher education. The privilege of hosting the Statutory Conference of AIFUCTO is a testimony for  the yeomen services rendered by AMUCT.

 

DAKSHINA KANNADA & UDUPI

Dakshina Kannada & Udupi Districts, the two costal districts in the state of Karnataka in India are  bordered by Uttara Kannada District to the north, Chikkamagaluru district to the northeast, Hassan District to the east, Kodagu to  the southeast, and Kasaragod District in Kerala to the south. The Arabian Sea bounds them on the west. These districts have a high  rate of literacy with 88.63% for Dakshina Kannada and 86.28 % for Udupi which is much higher than the state average of 75.6%. With more than 200 degree colleges, one State University, 4 Deemed Universities, 8 medical colleges, 25 engineering colleges and several paramedical and  professional institutions . These districts have  become a hub of higher education attracting students from all over the globe. Various education models have been experimented.

            Dakshina Kannada also known as South Kanara is popularly called Tulunandu is a land of culture, tradition and rituals. Nagaradhane or Snake worship is practised according to the popular belief of the Naga Devatha to go underground and guard the species on the top. Worship of spirits is prevalent in these areas. Rituals like Bhuta Kola are done to satisfy the spirits. Kambla, a form of buffalo race on muddy track in the paddy field, is organized. Yakshagana is the popular folk art of this district. The Yakshagana is a night-long dance and drama performance practiced in Tulu Nadu with great fanfare.

 COORG

Coorg also known as Kodagu rated as one of the top hill station destinations in India is known for its hospitability of people and beautiful scenery. This is one of the best destinations for nature lover in India. Tourists get fascinated by colourful scenery, wooded slopes, undulating landscape and quaint villages of Coorg. It is  well known in the world for coffee and its "brave warriors". Kodagu is considered rich with wildlife and has three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park: the Brahmagiri, Talakaveri, and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuaries, and the Nagarhole National Park, also known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

Mangalore being a cosmopolitan city is beautiful and exquisite with the mystic rivers, Arabian Sea, magnificent churches and temples and many worth seeing places.  Several pilgrimage centers like Dharmasthala, Udupi, Kollur, Subramanya, Moodabidri are quite proximate. Snake Park in Pilikula, 1000 Pillar Jain Temple in Moodabidri, Bekal Fort, Ullal Darga, world famous Aloysius Chapel Paintings, Bijai Museum, etc. offer exuberant experiences. Mangalore is demographically diverse with several languages, including Tulu, Konkani, Kannada, and Beary commonly spoken, and is popularly known as the commercial capital of Karnataka. The city's landscape is characterized by rolling hills, coconut palms, freshwater streams, and hard red-clay tiled-roof buildings

 FUCTAK

The Federation of University & College Teachers Association in Karnataka (FUCTAK) is a united body of university and college teachers in Karnataka. With 8 affiliating units, FUCTAK has fought many battles for upholding the dignity and decorum of the teaching community. Mangalore University campus at Mangalagangothri, located about 20 km to the south-east of Mangalore, sets the tone for the educational endeavors of the three districts under the jurisdiction of the University. It grew out of a modest postgraduate centre of the University of Mysore to become the focal point of an

independent University in 1980. The University has 25 PG Departments on the Campus with 195 affiliated colleges that include 2 constituent, 18 education and 5 autonomous colleges, a PG Centre at Coorg and has 19 Endowment Chairs.

St Aloysius College – the premier minority educational institution with more than 133 years in existence has been at the service of the youth of Mangalore and its environs is run by the Mangalore Jesuit Education Society (MJES). The college is autonomous from June 2007 onwards and is

affiliated to Mangalore University. The College offers 6 Undergraduate, 6 Postgraduate Diploma, 17 Post Graduate Degree and 8 Doctoral Programmes. Currently around 5000 students pursue their studies in the campus.

 HOW TO REACH MANGALORE:

By Air: Mangalore Air Port is the air base that provides connectivity to and from Mangalore via air. The airport is 15k.m away from the Venue of the Conference. Other than international flights, it is connected to Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

By Rail. Mangalore has two major railway stations. Mangalore Central (IR station code : MAQ) is just one  kilometer from the Venue. Mangalore Junction(IR station code : MAJN) is situated in Kankanady, about 5 km from the city centre. Most long-distance trains and all trains not terminating at Mangalore stop at this station.

By Road:  Mangalore has good network of roads. Three National Highways viz., NH-66 (formerly NH -17) linking Panvel and Kanyakumari, NH-75 (formerly NH-48) linking Mangalore and Bangalore, NH-248    (Formerly NH-13) linking Mangalore and Sholapur pass through the city
